Teresa Wingar
Kinburn. Ontario.
Teresa grew up in the picturesque New Forest, in Rural Southern England, where as a child, she discovered & loved the sticky slippery texture & moldability of Clay found in the garden...
Her training as a Potter was also in England, through further education at College, Art School, then an Apprenticeship.
By 1981 in an Old English Village, she had established her own Studio “Brook Pottery” in a former Undertaker’s Carriage House, next door to the Pub where she once worked in the kitchens.
She moved to Canada in 1988 & retained Historical Influences & Designs from Medieval through to Victorian times, although, the local Canadian landscape & a love of Folk Art soon joined these Influences.
Using a formidable decorating technique called “Slip Trailing” & a very steady hand, Teresa Pipes Coloured Liquid Clay from a squeeze bottle with a fine nozzle, onto her damp Wheel Thrown Pots which achieves Intricate and Tactile Patterns which bond & become one with the Pot.
Her recent work features Marbling & Feathering of the Clay Slips, which allows for pouring & blending of the colours in a unique way.
The pots are ultimately fired to mid-range 1200c in an electric kiln and the True Colours of the Designs are revealed by the Glaze Coating.
Now with over 40 years’ experience & although her work has developed into Art Pottery, her roots as a Functional Potter remain & it is robust Stoneware, so it brings great pleasure to hear of her Pottery being used.
She is excited by the natural process of evolution, developing New Patterns and experimenting with modern Ceramic Materials, Colours & Tools while maintaining the “New Antique” appearance of her pieces.
Teresa organises & participates in the local Red Trillium Studio Tour twice a year & she also welcomes visitors to her Rural Kinburn Studio by appointment, where you can enjoy the gardens. view the Pottery & further understand the Slip process.
